When the Covid-19 pandemic spread across the world, many countries implemented lockdown measures to reduce the spread. This has changed the world’s business models since most people are working from home.

Many industrialists can tap into this new normal and create new opportunities during this time, as there has never been a more critical period for businesses to leverage technology to thrive in the new normal. It all starts with thinking out of the box.

A digital marketing and ecommerce workshop was held by Southern University College (Southern UC) in collaboration with Johor Digital Economic Centre (JDEC). It consisted of six weeks of theory classes, followed by another six weeks of practical classes. This allowed students to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for SMEs to do digital marketing and ecommerce.

Approximately 100 students participated in this workshop, who were trained to connect everything with e-commerce related technologies. Optimistically, it can indirectly transform SMEs in Johor to expand their business horizon.

Faculty of Business and Management

The Faculty of Business and Management (FBM) of Southern UC offers quality courses with a focus on integrated theories and practices to enhance multi-intelligence, leadership, creativity and resilience through innovative teaching methodologies, reinforced by case studies and small group discussions.

The faculty offers its own seven homegrown undergraduate degree programmes and seven diplomas, one Master and one Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

All programmes have been accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Higher Education Ministry.

The financial industry is active and rapidly shifting in this new era of digitalisation and fintech. The industry is massive yet attractive with great potential for profitability. Everybody can join the industry, but not everyone can excel in the field. Needless to say, the shortage of financial talent is always a global issue.

Therefore, it is essential for universities to offer quality programmes with excellent career prospects to equip professionals with the right skills.

Southern UC’s Bachelor in Accounting (Honours) provides students many career opportunities in Malaysia and ASEAN countries particularly Singapore - one of the most competitive and innovative financial hubs in the world.

Upon completion of Southern UC’s Bachelor in Accounting (Honours), students are given up to a maximum of nine papers exemption from The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and up to a maximum of seven papers exemption from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

Currently, FBM is working in full swing with the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) for an off-site accreditation as we transition towards the endemic phase.

During their final year of studies, students will go through six months of industrial training in established and reputable firms. Students would also have the opportunity to engage in international internship programmes with 61 partner universities worldwide.

This allows them to apply classroom knowledge to the job and develop workplace skills such as business communication and time management. The work experience will certainly enhance students’ future employability so that most graduates are able to secure a job with the same firm upon graduation.

In addition, to provide additional impetus to reskilling, upskilling and lifelong learning for working adults, the Southern MBA programme was launched as a micro-credential module-based programme in January. This provides an alternative to those interested in earning a formal qualification through a flexible education system.

Successful candidates for the selected micro-credentials modules can apply for Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) to defray their tuition fees on a modular basis. Skim Bantuan Latihan (SBL) is the main scheme under HRD Corp and its objective is to encourage employers to retrain and upgrade their employees’ skills in line with their operational and business requirements.

Under SBL, employers are free to identify their own training needs and implement the training programme in stages.

A Southern MBA degree will open up many windows of opportunity. It can increase earning potential while helping to build valuable peer networks that unlock future opportunities.

At Southern UC, well-structured courses with extensive lecturer-student consultation and guidance are designed for working adults with busy schedules.
