MALAYSIA has managed to secure a total of 123 business events to be held from 2022 until 2030 worth about RM1.4 billion in economic impact.
“The total number of delegates from these events are 177,000 delegates and will contribute to RM1.4 billion in estimated economic impact,” Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) CEO Datuk Seri Abdul Khani Daud said.
He added that the bureau has been working closely with associations to attract international conferences, conventions and symposiums which are all components of the business events industry since 2009.
Abdul Khani said that since the establishment of MyCEB, the bureau has managed to support more than 2,651 events which brings around RM16.7 billion economic impact.
“2019 was the height of our success where we hosted 330 business events activities which is one of the highest ever achieved. However, due to the pandemic the numbers have been dropped to only 21 events in 2020,” he said.
“Despite those challenges, I’m proud to say that our association leaders have risen to the occasion to work with us in bidding for future events.”
Between 2020-2021, MyCEB has approved 67 programmes.
Furthermore, MyCEB with the support of the industry players has developed the Malaysia Business Events Strategic Marketing Plan 2021-2030 that is anchored upon three strategic axes to expand performance namely optimisation, foresight and competitiveness.
“This plan aspires to deliver a transformative outcome and needs a strong short-term action plan for us to recover swiftly. By 2030, business events are expected to attract 5.9 million delegates, contributing to RM42.12 billion in estimated economic impact whilst creating an estimated 25,833 total employment,” he added.
Recently, MyCEB collaborated with Hybrid City Alliance and Asia Convention Alliance to rebuild the business events industry in the region. With the aim to be a compliance industry, MyCEB ensures that the events made locally meet the highest standard of certification.
Other than that, MyCEB is also working directly with various ministries on identifying events that come to Malaysia and have received feedback from over 13 ministries which recorded 168 business events programmes that were held in 2021 alone.
With the reopening of Malaysia’s border to international travellers next month, MyCEB with the full support from the ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) launched the 3R Initiative.
With the theme Dream Possible, the event gathered around 200 association leaders in the business events industry.
Motac Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (picture) said that the theme Dream Possible bodes well with how business events work. The Association Day is an exciting and invigorating space to be in, with association leaders coming out to share their knowledge in the industry.
Motac together with MoF launched the 3R Initiative which stands for Reset, Restart and Responsible; as a recovery programme for the industry.
“To ‘reset’ the industry, MyCEB will offer and provide full Covid-19 insurance coverage to the first 10,000 international delegates who will attend conferences in Malaysia.
“Meanwhile, to encourage and assist business events industry partners ‘restart’ their business and gain momentum, MyCEB will cover a portion of the cost for industry players to take part at the international trade shows,” she said in her speech during the MyCEB Association Day yesterday.
“As a responsible government and in line with the Malaysian Family spirit, the bureau will assist industry players to obtain professional qualifications such as Certified Marketing Professional, Certified Emergency Manager or other international qualifications that are available for our industry,” she said.
Furthermore, the ministry in collaboration with MyCEB and Business Events Council Malaysia also launched the MySafe Business Events Planner to help communities network, collaborate and innovate together.
“The digital planner is a step-by-step format to assist and guide the international business events traveller and organiser through the safety measures as well as to rebuild public confidence in our business events industry,” she added.
To further develop Malaysia’s local craft industry through international and domestic business events, memorandum of understanding between MyCEB and Malaysian Handicraft Development Corp was also signed at the end of the ceremony.
“The partnership will further promote Malaysia’s rich heritage using Malaysian-made products, in ways that will help our local craftsmen and also elevate the rural economy. MyCEB and the business events industry will prioritise and use only Malaysia’s local crafts as gifts and souvenirs for international delegates,” she explained.
