PETALING JAYA: Rainy days are not entirely gloomy for all with some businesses such as launderettes doing well with a steady stream of customers.
Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Laundry Association president Tham Ah Wah said business has risen more than two fold for the self-service as well as the commercial and industrial laundry services.
Tham said self-service laundromats catering to individuals for personal use have recorded a huge uptick in business as a result of the wet weather and the floods that have impacted households recently.
However, Tham said that due to a labour shortage, their business had been impacted as they have almost doubled their orders but their number of workers was down by half.
“This is why we are unable to cope with the present load of soiled linens. Some operators have been forced to give up or reduce their production as they are struggling to meet the demands of the commercial sector to deliver on time to the businesses that acquire their services,” he said.
Meanwhile, Electrical and Electronics Association of Malaysia president Siew Choon Thye said they have not seen any exponential surge in demand as most people do not realise that there is a need to check their electrical wiring after a flood.
“Many people do not know their house wiring needs to be checked after flood damage. The wiring insulation needs to be checked as there may be power failure due to moisture in the wiring,” he said.
Siew urged the public to get their wiring insulation, sockets as well as other various wiring issues checked to prevent short circuit or power failure in their homes.
He pointed out that the power at the electrical distribution boards should be turned off in the event of a flood, and that all electrical devices, appliances, and equipment should be unplugged too.
He added that affected electrical appliances for cleaning and inspection and repair should be done by competent and certified electricians.
