PETALING JAYA: A local green furniture maker managed to break into the US and European markets via the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) Export Promotion Programme, says Datuk Lim Ban Hong.
The Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister said One Tech (M) Sdn Bhd, an SME in Ampang, suffered a decline in orders during the initial outbreak of Covid-19 last year.
"With Matrade’s programmes, its orders have since increased, enabling the company to get through the economic downturn," he said in a statement on Tuesday (March 16).
Lim said One Tech, a pioneer in green furniture manufacturing using sustainable and reclaimed materials, entered international markets by selling its products on Amazon and other major digital marketing platforms.
"The workers consist of trained locals experienced in operating advanced machinery, allowing the production line to be highly efficient while relying less on manpower," he added in the statement, which was released after his visit to One Tech on Tuesday.
He said the concept of recycling old wood from old buildings, reprocessing it and adding new design flair is one example of the company's innovation.
"Besides that, One Tech has also introduced a range of products such as intricate wooden crafts. Being flexible with materials not only makes the company eco-friendly, but also ensures sustainability," he added.
"I am proud that the initiatives and incentives by the ministry have helped the company expand to where it is today.
"I urge more SMEs to actively sign up for these initiatives, participate in Matrade events and training courses, and to always be in the know of international market leads, so that they are prepared to help with economic revival in the post-pandemic era," he said.
According to Lim, Matrade issued 3,504 international market leads, while 577 local firms have benefitted under the Export Promotion Programme.
The ministry's market development grants totalling RM23.96mil have helped 1,374 entrepreneurs and budding exporters set up new ventures, he added.
