KUCHING: The Serian DAP chairman has urged the state government to focus on helping the people, small- and medium-sized enterprises as well as revive the economy instead of dwelling on the 12th Sarawak state election.

Brolin Nicholsion said most Sarawakians are currently struggling to put food on the table for their family and this might even lead to some turning to crime for their survival.

“Focus on the people instead of the state election. Let’s learn from the Sabah election that had caused the spike of Covid-19 cases in the country.

“Inject more financial support for the people and not window-dressing initiatives that eventually does not bring any effect to the livelihood of Sarawakians,” he said in a statement today.

Nicholsion also urged the state government to impose an inter-district travel ban to curb the spread of the virus from red zone areas in the state. With such a ban in place, only those with a police permit are allowed to travel between the districts.

As of yesterday, 29 out of the 40 districts in Sarawak are red zones.

He said such a move can curb the spread of Covid-19 in Sarawak as the state had been reporting a high number of cases recently.

“For instance, those living in Kuching would prefer to travel to Serian to search for durians or places to eat as they feel unsafe to move around in Kuching. But, they don’t realise that they might also be spreading the virus and infecting people living in the green zone.

“By imposing inter-district travel, only those who travel for business purposes are allowed. Besides, it also helps to keep track on those entering from a red zone,” he said.

Nicholsion added that it was also time for the Sarawak government to act on their own wisdom and prioritise the people in Sarawak and not rely on any decision made by the federal government.
