Grab Malaysia is reducing its ceiling commission by 5% for all Food and Mart (F&M) merchants nationwide beginning Jan 13 until Feb 10, in response to the re-implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Its MD Sean Goh said in a statement that since the first MCO, the e-hailing company has permanently reduced its maximum commissions to all merchant partners so that the latter could earn more.

He said as the nation moves to the second round of MCO (MCO 2.0), supporting the community will remain the company’s priority.

“As a homegrown company, we remain committed to safeguarding the livelihoods of our ecosystem of partners.

“With the new standard operating procedures for businesses and eateries, we are initiating several support measures to help our merchant partners cope especially with the loss of dine-in customers, while ensuring the community still can access their daily needs safely, conveniently and affordably,” Goh said.

He said Grab will absorb all costs for self-pickup orders while temporarily reducing commission to 0% if customers pick up orders themselves.

“We hope that self-pickup will enable contactless pre-ordering and cashless take outs to help avoid waiting and crowding.

“We’ve also brought back our ‘Local Heroes’ campaign to provide free visibility, awareness and promotions across various marketing and digital channels to support our neighbourhood businesses, including our local food courts, pasars and small business owners,” Goh said.

Last year, participating merchants in the “Grab Local Heroes” saw an increase in sales of up to 43%.

“We hope that, once again, this will help generate awareness for our local heroes in this difficult time,” Goh added.

He said the newly revamped GrabMerchant platform will allow merchants to have more control over online stores particularly if running low on supplies or unable to cope with orders.

“Our partners can also leverage on social media channels to promote products and services with a self-generated personalised link to their store via their GrabMerchant app.

“In parallel, as more customers will be reliant on delivery services, we have various efforts to provide greater convenient and affordable access to their daily needs, while helping them save on expenses,” Goh said.

Among the extra initiatives taken by Grab is low delivery fees in an effort to support small independent, and small and medium enterprise (SME) merchants.

Goh said the “Food Courts” category has expanded into 100 food courts with 1,000 hawker stalls.

“Customers can continue to enjoy their nasi lemak, char kuey teow, kopi ais or other food court delights and ‘Mix & Match’ from different stalls while paying only one delivery fee,” he said.

He added that there will be promotional codes and various saving discount points for people to enjoy while everyone moves through this phase.

“We urge our customers to either schedule their orders or order their food and essential needs early to avoid disappointment, and to always adopt contactless and cashless deliveries as we stay home and stay safe to flatten the curve,” Goh said.
