Health and wellness company Amway Malaysia Sdn Bhd is supporting the Welfare Department (JKM) by equipping families at the Intan Baiduri People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, with entrepreneurship skill sets.

“At a time of health and economic challenges, we want to guide communities affected by the Covid-19 pandemic on a promising route to financial independence and self-sufficiency, ” said Amway Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei managing director Mike Duong.

Since March, Amway has been providing aid in the form of personal protective equipment (PPE) and nutritional food to communities highly impacted by the pandemic.

“We also want to create a sustainable platform for these families to increase their income opportunities.

“We hope this will enhance their quality of life, given the rise in financial challenges due to the foreclosures of many businesses, ” he said, adding that entrepreneurship was at the heart of Amway Malaysia.

The company has to date more than 260,000 Amway Business Owners nationwide.

Part of the company’s confidence in the affected lower-income group’s potential to become entrepreneurs stems from findings in the Amway Global Entrepreneurship Report 2020.

The report finds that 82% of respondents in Malaysia have the desire to become entrepreneurs, displaying the similar level of interest as in previous years –- 2018: 81%; 2016: 82%; and 2015: 82%.

“By sharing our business expertise and solutions, we hope to inspire and tap into the talents of affected communities, especially the homemakers and those whose livelihoods have been affected.

“Starting a small business of their choice will enable families to help ease some financial constraints that they face, ” Duong said during the distribution of food baskets to families at PPR Intan Baiduri.

The initiative under JKM’s Kembara Prihatin Negara programme –- which aims to address the immediate nutritional needs of the community -– saw Amway Malaysia along with its long-term business partners Philips Malaysia, Noxxa Products Sdn Bhd and Orion Food Specialties Sdn Bhd donate 100 food baskets worth RM45,000.

“On behalf of JKM, we are grateful to have an organisation like Amway Malaysia that has been consistent in partnering with us to help the communities in need, ” said JKM Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur director Hezleen Hassan in her speech.

Initiated by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, the Kembara Prihatin Negara programme is aimed at helping one million people in need.

This round of donations is the culmination of a series of contributions by Amway Malaysia this year, bringing its total contributions in cash and kind to over RM3mil.
