The three-day Taiwan Expo 2020 in Malaysia was hosted online in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The latest instalment of this popular trade expo utilised 360-degree 3D virtual reality to recreate the exhibition hall for a truly immersive experience.

Visitors were able to experience the future of exhibitions and participate in the continued growth of Taiwan-Malaysia economic and trade relations.

Taiwan External Trade Development Council (Taitra) chairman James CF Huang led the opening ceremony together with Malaysia Friendship and Trade Centre (Taipei) president Sharon Ho Swee Peng, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia representative Anne Hung, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) Exports Promotion and Market Access Division’s China and Northeast Asia section director Khairul Annuar Abdul Halim and SME Association of Malaysia national president Datuk Michael Kang Hua Keong.

Huang said that Taiwan and Malaysia had always had a close relationship.

On economic and trade relations, Hung emphasised that Taiwan and Malaysia’s economy and trade were complementary.

Taiwan was Malaysia’s sixth largest trading partner while our country was Taiwan’s seventh largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching nearly US$20bil (RM81.4bil) in 2019.

Khairul Annuar revealed that Matrade and Taitra extended their memorandum of understanding by two years to enhance bilateral trade cooperation and trade promotion in halal goods, food and beverage, information and communications technology and e-commerce.

He added that Taiwan and Malaysia could also collaborate on Industry 4.0, smart machinery and digital healthcare.

Event organiser Taitra highlighted that Taiwan Expo 2020 in Malaysia showcased products from 200 exhibitors in 13 themed pavilions across seven major categories — Taiwan Good, Taiwan Lifestyles, Health Care and Beauty, Gadgets and Green Tech, Industry 4.0, Taiwan Tourism and Halal Taiwan.

In view of the ongoing battle against the global pandemic, the Bureau of Foreign Trade brought together more than 2,000 Taiwanese manufacturers in the personal protection equipment industry and 20 medical institutions to create the Taiwan Global Anti-Covid-19 Pavilion, a one-stop online medical platform that showcased the latest in pathogen detection, testing and back-end smart medical systems.

Each business matching session attracted more than 200 buyers and each station handled more than 400 one-to-one business discussions.

The exhibition covered products, culture, food, clothing, housing and transportation solutions as well as technology to combat the pandemic.

This year’s event showcased 19 halal products, including various halal-certified snacks, raw materials and condiments.
