GEORGE TOWN: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) want the Federal Government to play a proactive role in matchmaking them with businesses in the country.

SME Association of Malaysia president Datuk Michael Kang said under Budget 2021, the government should implement e-business platforms that would assist SMEs to interact physically with multinational corporations and other potential customers for fresh business opportunities.

“SMEs are still facing challenges and need wider access to the markets in the country,” he said, adding that the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) should initiate more programmes to help SMEs access overseas markets.

“We’d also like to see a budget for SMEs to digitalise their businesses.

“Digitalisation is the norm now as the Covid-19 pandemic has forced more local businesses to conduct their dealings through e-platforms,” he said.

On the moratorium, Kang said it should be extended, as more than 50% of the SMEs in the country were facing financial difficulties.

Small and Medium Enterprises Association (Samenta) national secretary SH Yeoh said the Federal Government should explore the possibility of reducing employers’ EPF contribution by 2% for 2021.
