PETALING JAYA: South-East Asian corporate innovation accelerator RISE and Malaysia Digital Economy Corp (MDEC) have teamed up to organise Malaysia’s largest virtual hackathon.

In a joint statement yesterday, they said the event will be supported by the private sector, including Celcom Axiata Bhd, Malaysia Airlines Bhd, Eco World Development Group Bhd, Guocoland Malaysia Bhd and Pos Malaysia Bhd.

“The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has taken a toll not only on Malaysians but also on the country’s economy that has seen key industries such as tourism, retail, property, manufacturing and many more being severely affected, ” they said

“Amid the crisis, the pandemic also changed the way of doing business and hastened the digital transformation of many large corporations and SMEs alike.

“New innovations in business models and technologies have been developed and implemented in a short time as we step into the ‘new normal’ era, ” said RISE and MDEC.

The application for the Cross-Industry Virtual Hackathon will be open on Sept 5.

Armed with problem statements from real business cases, RISE and its partners will share these challenges from the telecommunications, tourism, logistics, real estate and retail industries to seek support from innovators across Malaysia to solve them.

The pre-hack day is open to everyone to find out about the corporates and partners involved in the hackathon, explore the problem statements and challenges issued from top-notch organisations, listen to a world-class keynote speaker on innovation, and build up skills from “best-in-class” tech and training companies.
