KULAI: The Johor government is urging SMEs to register their brands under the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) to better improve their competitiveness in the local and international market.

Johor investment, entrepreneur development, cooperative and human resource committee chairman Mohd Izhar Ahmad said that trademark protection is important especially when it comes to business expansion and protecting its patents and business know-how.

He added that registered proprietors or applicants will also be taught on handling their businesses with the latest technology.

“As of July 30 this year, we have about 2,984 registered companies in the state that are well-versed technopreneurs.

“The state aims to get more SME registered and the government will conduct ongoing patent commercialization and protection awareness so that more SMEs are better prepared for any business changes or opportunities, ” he said.

He was met at a press conference after the officiating ceremony of the Intellectual Property Commercialization Seminar at Impiana Hotel, here on Tuesday (Aug 25).

He added that the increase in patent applications will also help entrepreneurs in sharing their knowledge and expertise to other businesses and research agencies.

“With a registered trademark, we can identify our level of innovation and see where we can improve our market, nurture the type of business that can compete and produce a product that can strive both locally and internationally, ” he said.
