KOTA KINABALU: Pos Malaysia received a sharp increase in parcel deliveries to Sabah by 41 per cent from January to July compared to the same period last year.

Pos Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Rozaidi Md Sharif said the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO) enforcement caused more consumers to turn to online purchasing.

“Since MCO was implemented, Sabah Pos Malaysia has received 65,000 to 80,000 parcels daily, causing delayed delivery because we can only ship 20,000 parcels per day.

“As such, Pos Malaysia has tried to solve the problem by taking several initiatives, including establishing a new Pos Laju Centre (PPL) in Lok Kawi, which is now able to process or deliver 40,000 to 60,000 parcels a day more quickly and systematically,” he said

He said this after the opening of the Pos Laju Centre in Lok Kawi by Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Chairman Dr Fadhullah Suhaimi, here, Sunday.

Mohamed Rozaidi said the Lok Kawi centre was the second distribution centre established in Sabah, with the first one located in the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park.

“Realising the increase in online shopping or e-commerce, Pos Malaysia will continue to work more proactively to increase efficiency and ability to provide the best service to customers,” he said.

He said among the latest initiatives to expedite delivery of parcels to Sabah, Pos Malaysia had recently launched direct cargo flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau, Sabah, operated by Pos Asia Cargo Express Sdn Bhd (Pos ACE), a subsidiary company of Pos Malaysia Group

“Pos ACE operates six round-trip flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau in a week using a Boeing 737-400 cargo aircraft capable of carrying 18 tonnes of cargo per flight.

“Through direct flights to Tawau by Pos ACE, Pos Malaysia is able to increase air cargo capacity by about 30 per cent and at the same time, open up more business opportunities and small industries in Tawau as well as boosting local economies,” he said.
