Maxis Bhd is fully-equipped to roll out its 5G mobile network and they are waiting for the government’s upcoming disbursement on the telecommunication spectrum.

Maxis CEO Gokhan Ogut (picture) said the company completed its technical readiness assessment last year along with all the necessary agreements related to the 5G infrastructure with local and international partners for the implementation of the advanced communication network.

“5G has been on our agenda for the last two years. We started the lab trials in 2018, took it out to the field in the first quarter of 2019 and we have been participating in demo trials ever since.

“We are ready to launch 5G and we are waiting for the spectrum two be released so we could begin the roll out across the nation, both for consumers and enterprises,” he said in a virtual press briefing after the launch of Maxis’ new brand purpose yesterday.

In October last year, Maxis signed a landmark agreement with China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd for the provisioning of a 5G network in the country. The latter will supply 4G or LTE and 5G radio equipment and services.

Ogut said Maxis has also been seeking global expertise from technology companies such as Amazon Web Services, Google LLC, Microsoft Corp and Vodafone Group plc, while including participation from local businesses to enhance its current technologies.

“We have global partners who are working together with us to bring their solutions and technologies into the country.

“For the 5G development, we are also working with the locally-made systems through local partners, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups in building the 5G ecosystems and solutions,” he added.

In June, the Malaysian government revoked the 5G spectrum that was awarded to five telecommunication companies (telcos) after receiving backlash on the process which was conducted without open tender.

Previously, the government reportedly had assigned the 700MHz spectrum bands to Celcom Axiata Bhd, Digi.Com Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd, Altel Communications Sdn Bhd and Maxis.

On the telco’s new brand direction, Ogut said the new vision is in line with Maxis’ five-year transformational plan to accelerate its growth by reaching a wider customer base. “We launched a long-term plan and a new vision a year and a half ago to accelerate our transformations. The brand refresh is in line with our goal to reach out to more Malaysians through our core products, Maxis and Hotlink,” he said.

Ogut added that the new brand reflects Maxis’ vision in helping Malaysians to have access to better connectivity.

The new brand direction, “Always be Ahead”, was launched in conjunction with Maxis’ 25th anniversary, and the upcoming Merdeka celebrations, signifying Malaysia’s rapidly evolving digital age.

As part of the campaign, Maxis will be rolling out a series of digitalisation programmes for individuals and businesses throughout the year as well as special offers in conjunction with the anniversary celebrations.
