Shopee Malaysia will be giving some 30,000 micro, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) more than RM1,500 in seller benefits.
This is a part of the e-commerce platform’s commitment to the short-term National Economic Recovery Plan (Penjana) Micro and SMEs E-commerce Campaign launched by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corp.
The Penjana plan, announced on June 9, is the country’s fourth stimulus package aimed primarily in helping businesses to recover from the impact of Covid-19.
In a statement, Shopee said the initiative is expected to revitalise the economy by accelerating the digitalisation of local businesses and providing new e-commerce sellers a boost.
Its regional MD Ian Ho said SMEs are a vital part of the nation’s economy where in 2018, it contributed 38.3% to GDP.
“This is how critical it is to invigorate this sector following the adverse effects of Covid-19. The current environment is a step-change in the growth of the digital economy as businesses find alternative sales channels to stay afloat,” he said.
Ho said in April and May 2020, Shopee injected RM15 million into the Malaysian economy via the Shopee Seller Support Package, designated to help both new and existing sellers as the pandemic wreaked havoc on people’s income particularly during the time of Movement Control Order.
“The Penjana Micro and SMEs E-commerce Campaign is the second support package that Shopee will be funding for Malaysian businesses, and this time with even better perks,” he said.
Some of the benefits in this campaign include RM1,000 in vouchers for Shopee stores to help kick start businesses, as well as RM500 in advertising credits to increase store visibility.
“Sellers will also have free participation in Shopee’s RM15 Free Shipping Package where the minimum spend for buyers to enjoy free shipping is reduced to RM15. This is opposed to the platform’s usual RM40, making this a more attractive offer for buyers.”
“There is also free participation for Shopee’s Coins Cashback Programme, where buyers will benefit from 10% with no minimum spend and can be used to offset following purchases,” Ho said.
He also noted that all these benefits are on top of Shopee’s existing seller benefits such as zero commission for marketplace sellers, zero listing fee, no registration fee and free e-commerce training via Shopee University.
“To be eligible for this campaign, sellers have to be local, registered as a Shopee seller from Jan 1, 2020, and have less than 10 completed orders before July 1, 2020,” Ho said.
Meanwhile, Ho said the platform would continue other efforts like campaigns and launches to help generate income for SMEs.
“We have run campaigns like ‘Jom Cari Makan’ where it helped over 400 food and beverage outlets get back on their feet by driving footfall to their stores.
“We have also assisted durian farmers to sell directly to consumers using our platform. We are committed to the Malaysian market,” Ho said.
