PETALING JAYA: It’s full throttle for economic sectors that are allowed to operate earlier as the nation enters the fourth phase of the movement control order (MCO) today.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali (pic) said companies that were allowed to operate under the first, second and third MCO phases could continue to do so at full operational capacity.

“These companies do not need to apply again to Miti for approval, ” he said, referring to the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti).

Azmin said the government, realising the need to overcome the economic crisis, had agreed for these companies to operate without restrictions according to the needs of the respective industries.

“However, companies that are allowed to operate must comply with the strict standard operating procedure that has been set for the respective sectors.

“Failure to do so will result in their approval to operate being revoked immediately and they will face legal action, ” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said the initiative would provide a boost to the recovery in the supply chain of goods and services to fulfil both domestic and international demand.

This, he said, would certainly have a positive impact on companies, especially small and medium enterprises.

Azmin said the decision was reached by the Economic Action Council (EAC) on Monday after discussion on the country’s latest economic and financial situation.

The meeting also looked into suggestions put forward by Miti, Finance Ministry, Bank Negara and Khazanah Nasional.

The Health Ministry provided feedback based on the suggestions put forward.

“The discussions focused on restarting and reviving the economic supply chain in a comprehensive manner that can help businesses operate completely, replenish stock and allow efficient delivery and service to consumers.

“The decision of the EAC meeting was presented to the National Security Council that was chaired by the Prime Minister in the presence of all mentris besar and chief ministers, ” he said.

Azmin noted that while the government had given some leeway in the regulations, the rakyat and business operators need to get used to the “new normal” and comply with social distancing, personal hygiene and health guidelines at work.
