GEORGE TOWN: Electronics companies and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) here will start to clear backlog orders, says Datuk Heng Huck Lee (pic).

This followed the national directive allowing businesses classified under the essential service category to operate without restrictions.

“It will help us to reduce the negative impact on the companies’ performance for the year.

“We hope to see more approvals given to industries supporting the electronics sector, ” the Free Industrial Zone Companies Association committee member said.

Small and Medium Enterprises Association Malaysia national secretary SH Yeoh said the announcement was a plus for those with approval to operate at full capacity.

“We hope that more approvals will be given to those supporting essential services such as transport, logistics and ancillary industries, ” she said.

Penang Master Builders and Building Materials Dealers Association adviser Datuk Lim Kai Seng said approvals for the 1,856 applications submitted to the International Trade and Industry Ministry were too little.

He hoped more approvals would be given out soon, he added.

“There are construction jobs worth at least RM5bil waiting to be carried out in Penang now.

“Giving out more approvals will ensure contractors receive payments from developers.

“This will enable them to survive this crisis. Otherwise, many of them might face bankruptcy.

“More approvals mean more foreign workers will have jobs to do and won’t engage in socially-ill activities, ” he said.
