PETALING JAYA: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) should do more for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the Malaysian corporate sector that have been severely impacted by the movement control order and the economic downturn, said Datuk N K Jasani, country managing partner of Grant Thornton Malaysia.

In a statement, Jasani said the fund should consider freezing EPF payments from both employers and employees for three months from April till June 2020.

“To ensure that this is not misused by employers, there can be a condition that this concession is only allowed if the employers do not terminate or retrench any of the employees for the period of nine months till December 2020, ” he added, noting that the current measures implemented by the EPF do not help SMEs with tight cash flows.
