NAIROBI: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has challenged Malaysia and Kenya to build a proper artificial intelligence eco-system, incorporating infrastructure, enhancement of pedagogical skills and inculcating a culture of research, all to be pursued within ethical frameworks.
The Prime Minister said the role of AI cannot be denied.
“It can help nations and individuals not just to break free from economic inertia of mediocre growth, but propel towards a trajectory of exponential progress.
“The foundation for using AI tools in education is investing in digital infrastructure which entails the development of reliable internet connectivity and access to technology in urban and rural areas.
“Universities and research institutions should be at the forefront to pursue AI research, focusing on the multiple challenges while public-private partnerships should be the rule rather than the exception,” he said at the Malaysia-Africa Higher Education Forum here.
The Prime Minister pointed to the importance of equity in access to education, ensuring policies that promote access to education for the poor and marginalised communities.
“In other words, to harness AI effectively for educational advancement and socio-economic development, states should adopt a proactive and strategic approach.
“The spirit of partnership is strengthened further when our people learn together with shared values while remaining faithful to their respective roots,” he said.
Stating that Malaysia’s commitment to Africa is steadfast, Anwar said the country seeks partnerships that uplifts communities, broadens opportunity and advances justice.
He said it is of great significance that Malaysia and Africa share histories shaped by struggle and resilience, emerging from colonial rule with a commitment to fairness and dignity and rebuilding through courage and determination.
“This experience from our belief that independence must be accompanied with intellectual transformation and matched with equity, and that while development must uplift all, education must remain the great equaliser.
“The commitment rests on a simple belief; that the future belongs to nations that invest in their people.
“Together, Malaysia and Africa can shape that future with confidence and moral purpose,” he added.
On his last day of his African tour, the Prime Minister also met with Kenya Red Cross secretary-general Dr Ahmed Idris, saying that Malaysia will explore room for cooperation between the country and the organisation.
“This includes training, capacity-building and sharing of expertise to ensure no communities are left behind when facing disaster and crises,” he said.
