PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will continue to strengthen trade and investment ties with partner countries, particularly in the semiconductor, artificial intelligence (AI), digital, and energy sectors, without compromising national interests, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He added that Malaysia is committed to pursuing high-value cooperation without jeopardising long-term relations with other countries.

"Negotiations with the United States (US) will be somewhat challenging because, of course, they want to fulfil their policy priorities and clarity.

"We have no problem taking the necessary steps to strengthen bilateral trade and investment with the US, but it should not affect our cooperation and good relations with other countries," he said during a briefing with chief editors of local and international media ahead of the 47th Asean Summit yesterday.

Present was Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Anwar also said Malaysia remains open to trade and cooperation opportunities to boost the national economy, including with the US.

"Semiconductors are among the key areas of focus, along with AI, digital, and energy.

Several negotiations are underway, and we hope they can be finalised before being brought to the Cabinet meeting this Friday," he added.

Anwar highlighted that Malaysia's consistent policies, political stability, and commitment to economic and energy transition make the country an attractive destination for foreign investors.

On trade agreements, including tariffs with the US, Anwar said discussions are nearing completion.

"In recent months, discussions and negotiations on tariffs and trade issues have been ongoing to strengthen trade and investment.

"I can say it is 99.9 per cent complete.

"The remaining 0.01 per cent will be finalised at the Cabinet meeting this Friday," he said.
