ALOR STAR: The Kedah Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM) has expressed strong support for the federal government's latest initiatives aimed at easing the cost of living, describing them as timely and reflective of the government's responsiveness to the people's concerns.

The initiatives, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier today, include a RM100 one-off cash assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, the reduced RON95 petrol price under a targeted subsidy mechanism, the decision to maintain current toll rates, and an expanded RM600 million allocation for the Jualan Rahmah Madani programme.

"These measures offer much-needed breathing room, particularly for low-income groups who continue to feel the pinch from economic pressures. It is a clear signal that the government understands the realities faced by them," the chamber told the New Straits Times.

Kedah DPMM said the move to cap subsidised RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre would directly benefit more than 18 million road users nationwide, including gig workers who depend on mobility for their livelihoods.

"It also aligns with national efforts to contain inflation, which was recorded at 1.3 per cent in the second quarter of this year," it added.

While broadly supportive, the chamber highlighted the importance of effective and inclusive implementation.

"The success of these initiatives hinges on practical, equitable rollout strategies that do not overlook small and micro Bumiputera entrepreneurs, especially in rural areas, who form more than 38 per cent of the country's retail economy."

The chamber lauded the significance of the RM100 cash aid but urged for flexibility in its usage.

"While the assistance is appreciated, its impact could be maximised by allowing spending at local cooperatives, rural provision stores, and small-scale Bumiputera vendors that operate at night markets, roadside stalls, and farmers' markets, so they can also benefit."

On the enhanced Jualan Rahmah Madani allocation, the chamber said the move would increase public access to affordable essentials.

It also proposed the introduction of special quotas for Bumiputera micro and small producers to ensure their meaningful participation in the supply chain.

"This would be in line with national affirmative action goals, ensuring their participation in this programme," it added.

On the targeted fuel subsidy, the group said it would preserve mobility and cost efficiency for small traders and working-class Malaysians amid ongoing inflationary pressures.

"At the same time, the subsidy mechanism must be kept simple, transparent, and accessible," it added.
