KUALA LUMPUR: The increase in the cost of kiosks to RM25,000 each under MyKiosk 2.0 is due to significant design improvements aimed at enhancing the well-being of small traders, the Housing and Local Government Ministry said.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page in response to online criticism over the cost hike, the ministry said the upgraded kiosks feature larger solar energy capacity, improved electrical systems including LED lighting, and a more user-friendly design, all aimed at supporting sustainable income-generating activities for micro-entrepreneurs.

"In line with these upgrades, the cost of a MyKiosk 2.0 unit is RM25,000. However, the rental rate remains low, not exceeding RM300 per month, and traders are given a six-month rental exemption period."

The MyKiosk project aims to assist the B40 group and micro, small and medium enterprises by providing standardised, safe, and comfortable business spaces.

It is intended to boost the income and socio-economic status of local communities by offering affordable kiosks for rent.

The ministry said MyKiosk 1.0, introduced in 2022, cost RM15,000 per unit and was well received, with an occupancy rate of 84.35 per cent.

"MyKiosk 2.0, which has been in operation for the past four months, has recorded a 61.5 per cent occupancy rate."

On procurement, the ministry said the selection and appointment of contractors are fully managed by local authorities through a regulated open quotation process.

Each local authority oversees contractor selection, kiosk quality, and placement based on local needs.

"For MyKiosk 2.0, 446 contractors have been appointed by 96 local authorities nationwide. All are registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) under Grade G1 and G2," it said.
