PETALING JAYA: US tech giants Intel and Oracle are concerned about the impact of US tariffs on their operations in Malaysia, says investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz.

He said both companies had held discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to explain some of the challenges they would face due to the tariffs, with Intel highlighting the importance of its supply chain for the commercial viability of its business.

“We have again asked for industries to support us because our interests are aligned, especially for US companies which are based in Malaysia and exporting their goods back to the US,” said Tengku Zafrul in a video on X.

“They mostly export intermediate goods, while the finished goods are produced in the US. It’s important for them to explain why this is beneficial for the US.”

Tengku Zafrul said the government is actively engaging with Intel, Oracle, and other US companies operating in Malaysia through organisations such as the US-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and the US-Asean Chamber of Commerce.

On April 2, US president Donald Trump announced stiff “reciprocal” tariffs on scores of countries, including Malaysia, which was hit with a 24% tariff rate.

With financial markets crashing, Trump did a U-turn by pausing implementation of the duties for 90 days on all affected countries except China, which was hit with a 145% tariff.
