KUALA LUMPUR: The country's largest manufacturing group has welcomed the free Occupational Safety and Health Coordinator (OSH-C) training programme, describing it as a boon for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said the programme could help SMEs, which make up over 98.5 per cent of businesses in the country, better safeguard their employees and foster a culture of safety.

"By equipping SMEs with the knowledge and tools to implement effective OSH practices, this programme will contribute to building a safer and more resilient workforce, a critical component of sustainable economic growth.

"Despite their vital role in the economy, SMEs often face challenges such as limited financial and human resources compared to larger corporations," he said in a statement today.

He added that such disparities could hinder their ability to implement robust OSH practices, a gap this programme aims to bridge.

Yesterday, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim announced the free OSH-C accreditation training for 10,000 people, involving an allocation of RM9 million.

Soh said a well-implemented OSH system demonstrates a company's commitment to employee welfare and aligns with global standards and stakeholder expectations.

"Having a dedicated OSH coordinator, a key requirement under the Occupational Safety and Health Act is vital for embedding a proactive approach to workplace safety, especially among SMEs.

"This role ensures that potential hazards are identified and addressed before they escalate, creating an environment where employees feel secure."

He added that this minimises workplace disruptions, resulting in smoother daily operations and improved productivity.

"We urge all eligible SMEs to take full advantage of this opportunity and commit to fostering safer workplaces."
