In an era of rapid technological advancement, the Malaysian government is actively encouraging its citizens to engage with emerging industries and career opportunities that will shape the workforce of tomorrow. This initiative highlights the commitment to preparing the nation for an increasingly tech driven future.
Sarawak’s Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development I, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, recently underscored the crucial role of parents in guiding their children toward promising careers. During the closing ceremony of the IC Design Make A Thon 2024 at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), he called on parents to stay informed about rapidly expanding sectors such as semiconductors, technology, engineering and other STEM fields.
“Research conducted by the Khazanah Research Institute in 2018 reveals that 72 per cent of a child’s career decisions are influenced by their parents. This statistic highlights the significant responsibility we carry in shaping our children’s future,” Dr. Annuar stated.
He stressed the need for parents to encourage their children to explore careers that align with their passions while also meeting the demands of tomorrow’s industries.
“Choosing a career in the semiconductor industry, especially in integrated circuit (IC) design, offers not only job security but also the chance to participate in a global industry that is pivotal to our technological future,” he added.
Furthermore, the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick announced a review of the Professional Training and Education for Growing Entrepreneurs (PROTEGE) programme under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
This review aims to enhance its effectiveness in the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan. Minister Ewon emphasised that PROTEGE serves as a platform for university students and graduates to discover employment opportunities, enabling engagement with companies interested in hiring them as trainees and staff.
“Engagement sessions for the 13MP are currently underway. The initiatives under the PROTEGE programme should continue, along with the implementation of new initiatives under KUSKOP (Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development),” he stated. He noted that since the launch of PROTEGE, a total of 60,649 students and graduates have participated in various entrepreneurship programmes.
In conjunction with these educational efforts, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has been proactive in addressing the evolving landscape of media and technology. He recently invited media professionals to collaborate on navigating the digital era during a Deepavali event hosted by the Malaysian Tamil Media Organisation (MTMO) in Kuala Lumpur. Minister
Gobind stressed the need for the media industry to adapt to technological advancements and highlighted the importance of cooperation among practitioners. “The emergence of AI in the media should not be seen as a threat. Journalists’ skills remain essential in providing a human touch and understanding real situations.”.
He echoed Malaysian Press Institute president Datuk Yong Soo Heong, stressing the media’s crucial role in shaping society and leveraging new technologies. “Reflecting on Deepavali, which symbolises the triumph of good over evil, I am optimistic that our media industry will continue to shape society, and new technologies will elevate their status.”
These initiatives underscore the Malaysian government’s commitment to ensuring that citizens are better prepared for an increasingly tech centric future. By fostering a collaborative spirit across various sectors, the government aims to drive progress and innovation that will benefit the economy and society as a whole.
As Malaysia continues to navigate the complexities of a digital future, the focus on education, talent development, and media engagement will play a vital role in equipping citizens with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Through these combined efforts, the Malaysian government is paving the way for a brighter, more technologically adept future for its citizens.
