Te Tang Po, chairman of the Federation of Associations for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (FASMEC), announced a new initiative to prepare 50 Cambodian SMEs for S5, GHP, ISO and HACCP certifications to elevate product quality for international export standards.

Tang Po made the remarks during the group’s annual review and planning meeting on February 28, at the Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh.

Po explained that the federation’s agenda for 2024 includes organising digital marketing training for SMEs nationwide. He said the federation will continue to provide training on accessing finance and partnering with banks.

“FASMEC will assist in fortifying the branch managers across the 25 capital-provinces, devise marketing strategies for SMEs and support approximately 50 SMEs in attaining [the] certifications. The effort is crucial for enhancing product quality, complying with international standards and fostering export growth,” he stated.

According to Tang Po, the federation intends to launch a website to showcase local SME products. He said platform will also offer short training courses in various areas such as financial reporting, digital marketing, planning skills and management. It will also include establishing a data management system that categorises SME products.

Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation Hem Vanndy emphasised the important role of SMEs in the country’s developmental and economic growth.

“The [ministry] will persist in its efforts to strengthen and promote SMEs, which form a vital pillar of the national economy and familial livelihoods,” the minister stated.

As of 2023, there were 44,628 registered SMEs in the Kingdom, providing jobs to 463,966 individuals.

The year witnessed 1,406 new registrations, creating 20,683 new jobs, reflecting the effective utilisation of local labour and raw materials, and the adoption of new technological advancements, according to the ministry.
