KOTA KINABALU: Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick proposed the introduction of a new policy that focuses on the economic and entrepreneurship development potentials of Sabah and Sarawak.

He said this “domestic Look East Policy” should be developed as a new roadmap for the successful economic development of the two states in view of their diverse potential resources and assets.

“If Indonesia can provide great determination in its vision to develop Kalimantan for its new capital of Nusantara and if Sarawak has leapt far ahead with new green-based technology and water industries, undoubtedly Sabah has its own strengths and potential which can be developed.

“For this reason, I am calling for increased attention to look to the nation’s east when it comes to development by giving extra focus to East Malaysia, particularly Sabah and Sarawak, as the country’s new economic catalysts similar to how economic hubs in the peninsula is being developed all this while,” he told reporters after officiating the UDA Carnival at Lintasan Deasoka, here.

Ewon, who is also United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) President, said the proposed new vision and policy is in tune with the spirit of unity of Sabah and Sarawak together with the Malaysian Federation.

“We all know Sabah and Sarawak is pivotal to the formation of Malaysia in 1963. Therefore, our vision is not limited to demanding the implementation of the Malaysia Agreement, but also a better focus which involves stronger cooperation between the Federal and State Government in boosting economic sectors and entrepreneurship in Sabah, and developing its new economic potential similar to what is being done by neighbouring countries in the region,” he added.

Ewon pointed out tourism and smart farming have high potential for development in Sabah due to its fertile land, significant population and proximity to Indonesia, which is emerging as a new economic power in the Borneo region.

Additionally, he said agriculture is among the eight focus points in the development of small, medium and micro enterprises in the country.

“For this reason, I want to see Sabah take this challenge,” said Ewon who acknowledged agriculture has also been the State Government’s priority.

“However, such initiatives can be further improved with smart farming.”

Touching on the UDA Carnival, Ewon said the initiative helps empower, enhance and amplify entrepreneurship among Sabahans and help them become among the industry players in the country, starting from SME.

“With the involvement of government agencies and exhibitors, such efforts will also disseminate information and services available for local entrepreneurs and the business community.

“At the Ministry level, We have prepared various specialised programmes for entrepreneurs which include the National Cooperatives Day (HKN), National Cooperatives Month and PMKS Week, followed by the National Level Hawkers and Petty Traders Carnival Day (HPPK) from Dec 7 to 9.

“This shows the Ministry and federal agencies have given their level best for Malaysians in Sabah,” he said and expressed hope Sabahans would take every opportunity provided in the Madani Budget 2024.
