PETALING JAYA: Despite the challenges businesses face in the post-Covid environment, most companies have already taken steps to comply with the minimum wage rule, according to the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF).

However, MEF president Syed Hussain Syed Husman said, some have just not been able to do so yet.

“If there are issues on implementation, they should be raised so that the MEF can work with the government to resolve these problems,” he said in a statement issued today.

Syed Hussain said the MEF also had employees’ interest at heart and are therefore keen to ensure that they received fair remuneration to meet their cost of living while ensuring sustainable employment and profitability.

He was responding to a call by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to employers to observe the RM1,500 minimum wage requirement that was implemented on May 1.

Ismail had said that this was necessary to ensure the well-being of Malaysians.

Apart from the minimum wage issue, Syed Hussain also advised employers to re-evaluate their employees’ post-Covid job scope to ensure that they are given the right compensation package.

“Many changes have occurred at the workplace like downsizing, right-sizing and multi-skilling in the work environment,” he added.

Syed Hussain also expressed support for the prime minister’s call to use a tripartite consultative approach through the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) to find solutions and deal with any shortcomings.
