Malaysia is set to strengthen digital and telecommunications cooperation with Timor-Leste, including potential collaboration on 5G rollout and connectivity initiatives.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the Communications Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have been tasked to explore areas of collaboration after the signing of two key memoranda of understanding between both countries on Oct 25.

“We’re looking at connectivity. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has asked my ministry and MCMC to study how we can share Malaysia’s experience in rolling out 5G,” Fahmi said.

Fahmi added that Timor-Leste has shown interest in Malaysia’s National Information Dissemination Centre initiative and subsea cable infrastructure, as part of efforts to improve digital access and regional integration.

He also noted that from Oct 17, Malaysians travelling to Timor-Leste can now access improved ASEAN roaming packages, while telecom operators from both nations are in discussions to offer better data plans for travellers and tourists.

“This is a very good first step in strengthening our regional digital ecosystem,” he said.
