Shop locally and put money back into the state’s economy as this helps keep businesses afloat which in turn preserves countless livelihoods.

That was the rallying call of Penang domestic and international trade, consumer affairs and entrepreneurship development committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain.

He was speaking while launching Kompleks Bukit Jambul’s Malaysia Day Rewards Programme 2020 at its outdoor promenade.

“The Covid-19 pandemic affects all of us.

“The tourism and retail sectors are among those which have been very badly impacted.

“We have to ensure these businesses survive so people don’t lose their sources of income, ” he stressed.

The mall’s programme, running until Sept 30, rewards shoppers with a RM20 cash voucher when they spend a certain amount at participating outlets.

KBJ Joint Management Body (JMB) chairman K.H. Chan said the aim was to allow consumers to stretch their ringgit.

“Visitors to KBJ will be rewarded instantly when they buy items.

“There are two ways to redeem -- the first by spending RM180 and above in three combined receipts at fashion, accessory, hair, beauty, spa or food and beverage outlets.

“The second is by spending RM380 and above in a single receipt at mobile, computer, gadget, textile, jewellery, watch, optical and grocery outlets, ” said Chan.

Guests at the launch of the campaign were treated to a multicultural dance performance and fashion show.

Abdul Halim commended the mall management for coming up with such an initiative to drive consumer spending.

Offering advice to businesses and entrepreneurs, he said, “Expand digitally so you’re not left behind in this new normal. This allows your products and services to reach a wider market.”

He also said the state government had allocated RM30mil under the Penang Business Continuity Zero-Interest Loan scheme to help small and medium businesses hit by the pandemic.

Also present at the launch was Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry Penang deputy head of enforcement Ridzuan Mohd Isa.
