MIRI, Oct 29 — Trade between Sarawak and Brunei reached RM3.39 billion in 2024, reflecting the close cooperation and shared prosperity between the two territories, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He said the year-on-year growth underscored robust collaboration strengthened by shared cultural heritage and historical ties.
“Economic trade between Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam has long been established and continues to develop positively from year to year.
“In 2024, trade between Sarawak and Brunei reached approximately RM3.39 billion out of Sarawak’s total foreign trade of RM198.7 billion.
“These figures not only demonstrate economic value but also reflect the close relationship between the two territories,” he said at the memorandum of agreement (MoA) signing ceremony between LCDA Agri Business Sdn Bhd and Sahamada Corporation Sdn Bhd for the Rimbunan Kaseh (RK) Sundar Lawas project at the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Brunei (Statob) on Tuesday.
Also present were Brunei’s Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Datuk Seri Abdul Manaf Metussin, Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei Datuk Mohd Aini Atan, LCDA general manager Datuk Seri Zaini Mahdi, Statob chief executive officer Samat Junai, Sahamada Corporation Brunei adviser Ilias Matussin, political secretary to the Sarawak Premier Awangku Jinal Abedin Datuk Pengiran Jawa, Batu Danau assemblyman Datuk Paulus Palu Gumbang, and Limbang Division Resident Yunus Tambi.
The MoA marks the participation of a Bruneian company in the RK Sundar Lawas project, covering 21.45 hectares for agricultural and aquaculture development.
Awang Tengah said Borneo holds vast potential to become a major hub for tourism and trade through joint programmes and promotional efforts among its territories.
“We are on the Island of Borneo, and I propose that we organise joint promotions under the name ‘Island of Borneo’, the world’s third-largest island.
“We will enhance such efforts for mutual benefit with Sabah and Labuan. Brunei Bay is an attraction where we can hold joint events such as regattas and marathons across Brunei’s bridge connecting Bandar Seri Begawan with Temburong.
“These activities will attract tourists and boost our SMEs (small and medium enterprises),” he said.
